ABOUT
US
General
The school was opened in 1977. It provides for the learning
needs of approximately 650 students Preschool to Year 7, building to
close to 700 students by term 4.
Banking
Commonwealth Bank provides a banking service to the children. Bank Day
is on Tuesday.
Communication
At Direk we value and encourage two-way communication between the family
and school. Teachers are available and willing to talk informally with
you when they don't have class commitments.
Inclement Weather Policy
During spells of very hot or very wet weather, children stay in the
classroom at recess and lunch and are supervised by the class teacher.
They are able to go to the canteen and return straight to the
classroom. The resource centre remains open at this time.
Hot Weather: When the forecast temperature is above 36 degrees
Celsius, hot weather policy will apply. Staff and students are notified
through the Daily Bulletin whether this policy will take effect on that
day.
Sporting Activities
Students participate in a daily fitness program.
Specialist Facilities
The resource centre is a large space. The IT room with its network of
16 computers adjoins this. There is a large activity hall and a double
portable available for PE, the Arts and gatherings.
Other Co-Curricular Activities
Guitar and keyboard lessons run by the Salisbury Music Centre are held
during school hours at the school.
Access for students with disabilities
There is wheelchair access to most portables, and all other buildings.
There are two toilets specifically for people with disabilities
including seated shower facilities in one.
Other

are held in a portable building within this complex.
Preschool
Support Offered
Intervention and support programs are operating to meet short and long
term goals. Literacy and Early Intervention have been a recent focus of
leadership positions, professional development and resources (human and
material).
A Preschool to 7 Student Review Team generally initiates and manages
support programs which are based around whole class, group and
individual intervention. R-2 literacy screening including documentation
is in place. An ASSPA committee has been established to support the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at our school. Language
development and maintenance programs are in place for Spanish and
Tagalog speaking students.
S.R.C. - (Student Representative Council)
Direk Schools
have two SRC’s R-2 and 3-7
All reps undertake a half day training after being elected by
their class. The classes had specific criteria to consider in
the selection of their reps. Two representatives from each
class (one boy and one girl) attend fortnightly meetings.
Current format includes ongoing development and practice of
skills, responding to issues raised by classes, and a committee
structure to work on school based projects.
Curriculum
From Reception to Year 7, curriculum is offered in the eight Areas of
Study (English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, Science,
Technology, Society and the Environment, the Arts and Indonesian).
Special Programs
Junior Primary classes begin the first 30 minutes of the day with the
early morning literacy routine. Between 50 - 90% of parents spend
this time supporting their child and other children with reading and
spelling tasks. Many classes buddy with primary classes for cross age
tutoring sessions. These programs vary in nature and intent.
School Council
The School Council is a body of parents who are elected at the Annual
General Meeting which is held in Term 1 of each year. It provides
advice to Principals on many aspects of the school and the well being of
students. The School Council initiates many fine projects within the
school.
Sub Committees of School Council include:
| Grounds |
School Watch |
| Fundraising |
New Zealand Exchange |
| Finance |
School Clothing |
| Canteen |
|
School Council members represent the parents of the school and
you can contact members through the Front Office. You do not have to be
a member of School Council to be on one of the sub-committees, so if you
are interested in any of the above groups please contact the school.
