Education at Direk over the last few years has developed into a
rich curriculum which aims to meet the needs of not only the
Indigenous community at Direk but also to promote and raise an
awareness of Aboriginal culture to the Non-Indigenous community.
Currently on staff to lead Indigenous
Education curriculum we have an Aboriginal Education Teacher (AET),
an Enlglish as a Second Language Teacher (ESL), an Aboriginal
Education Worker (AEW) and an ESL Student Support Officer (SSO).
The AET and ESL teacher along with the SSO, have a role which is
to improve the literacy and numeracy outomes for our Aboriginal
students. It also is about improving the well-being of the
Aboriginal students. The AEW main role is to provide a
link of communication between Aboriginal parents and the school
community.
Strategies implemented to carry out the
above-mentioned roles include:
*monitoring and collecting of
data around the literacy and numeracy results for all students
*providing intense support to
students who need one to one support
*having students work in small
groups to improve their literacy and numeracy skills
*updating teachers and parents
on how the students are going
*setting up a room for
Aboriginal students to visit and work in
*providing a cultural lesson for
all Aboriginal students which aims to improve their self-esteem
and provide them with further knowledge and understanding of
their culture
*assisting families who need
help with counselling, health, finance, attendance, clothing,
food etc
*providing staff with training
and development opportunities to update their knowledge and
understanding of Aboriginal culture
*providing opportunities for
parents/students to contribute their ideas and be involved in
the organising of Aboriginal celebrations such as Reconciliation
Week, NAIDOC week, Cultural Awareness Week, the Croc Festival
etc.
Our aim is to continue improving on the
above mentioned strategies which in turn will improve the
learning outcomes for all students at Direk
